ADAM CIGMAN-MARK

Pianist / Accompanist / Repetiteur

 

Adam Cigman-Mark is a sought-after collaborative pianist and repetiteur, with a particular interest in contemporary and 20th century repertoire. He has just joined the music staff at ENO as Trainee Repetiteur for the 2018-19 season, where he will be working initially on Paul Bunyan, Porgy and Bess and La bohème.

Adam has performed with ensembles and orchestras in venues across the UK, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, and the Cadogan Hall, and has worked as a vocal coach and repetiteur on several international operatic projects. These have included La Tragédie de Carmen (Berliner Philharmoniker Baden-Baden Easter Festival) and Schreker’s Der Ferne Klang (National Theater Mannheim, conducted by Dan Ettinger) and Die Gezeichneten (Opéra National de Lyon, conducted by Alejo Pérez). Adam is hugely committed to working on new music, and in April 2017, he had the privilege of joining the Britten-Pears Orchestra as an orchestral piano and celesta player for Mark-Anthony Turnage’s new Percussion Concerto, conducted by Marin Alsop. As a repetiteur, he has also prepared two world premieres - Hector Parra’s Wilde (Schwetzingen SWR Festival, conducted by Peter Rundel) and Michel Tabachnik's Benjamin, dernière nuit (Opéra National de Lyon, conducted by Bernhard Kontarsky). He is also experienced in accompanying choral work, and has played for John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir in rehearsals of choral works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

Adam recently completed a Masters in Piano Accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music with Distinction. He was taught there by James Baillieu, Ian Brown and Andrew West, and has received coaching from Bengt Forsberg, Joseph Middleton, Michael Dussek and Richard Stokes. He was a member of the RAM Song Circle, performing concerts of German Lieder, and also accompanied masterclasses with Helmut Deutsch, John Adams, Nicola Benedetti and Susan Bullock. Prior to this, he read English Literature at Clare College, Cambridge, where he also held a choral scholarship in the choir of Clare College under Graham Ross. During this time, he sang on three recordings for Harmonia Mundi, and had his first experiences working with internationally renowned conductors, including Nicholas Collon, Mark Elder and Lars Ulrik Mortensen. In his final year, he curated a performance project of ‘Entartete Musik’ (composers banned by the Nazis). He remains especially interested in promoting this repertoire, and in particular the work of Franz Schreker and Alexander Zemlinsky. Upcoming projects include developing a 20th century music collective - EntArt - with an intial project exploring the music of Polish Jewish composers Paul Kletzki and Karol Rathaus.
